31.1 Purpose

This appendix collects the shorthand used across the book so readers do not have to infer the meaning of the same terms from context alone.

31.2 Common notation

• frame or sampling frame: the set of units that could have been sampled
• stratum: a design group used for sampling and reporting
• count: an observed count of anglers, boats, or similar units
• interview: a trip, party, or completed interaction with anglers
• weight: the factor that expands a sampled unit to the target domain
• estimate: the expanded quantity reported for the population

31.3 Unit reminders

When reading the book, keep an eye on the unit that a number refers to. The same symbol may not mean the same thing in every chapter if the estimand changes.

31.4 Reading rule

If a formula, table, or code example seems ambiguous, check the chapter’s purpose and the “Key ideas” section first. The book is written to keep the design and the estimator aligned.
